Ray Today

Ray Beauty Supply had been on 8th Avenue off Times Square for over 50 years. They claimed to be the oldest beauty supply shop in the city. They had personality. And a great sign.

They vanished in 2013 and the storefront sat empty for awhile.

Recently, I noticed it's been turned into this chain that sells "artisanal" gelato. They have dozens of "boutiques" all over the world.

Used to buy hair dryers at Ray's. Was a great place. Vanished like so many others...

That gelato place is incredibly popular, too - always crowded.

Eighth Ave between 42nd and Columbus Circle hasn't been for New Yorkers since the late 80s - it's strictly tourist trade, bridge & tunnel at best. To be avoided like the plague. And, sadly, Ninth Avenue is moving in that same direction.

Are you kidding me? I never forget the last day I was in Ray's. The female sale associate told me that they were going to close the store temporarily to renovate and then reopen. Never happened. I miss it. They used to fix my curling and flat irons.
